After years of delays and rising concerns over the state of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria road, the Federal Government has handed over the job to a new contractor — Infiouest Construction Company — with a clear message: “Deliver in 14 months.”
The renewed N525 billion contract which was initially handled by the renowned Julius Berger Plc, marks a fresh start for Section II of the busy highway, which has long been a source of worry for motorists due to heavy traffic, bad portions, and recurring accidents, following unresolved disagreements over cost changes, the government revoked the contract and reassigned it.
The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, made this known during the official flag-off at Jere in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He stressed that the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria road construction would now use stronger concrete reinforcement pavement, which is expected to stand the test of time.
“This time, we are using reinforced concrete to make sure the road lasts longer. No more patching every few years,” Umahi said.

But beyond the concrete and the costs, what’s catching attention is the government’s firm stance on timelines and transparency. The new contractor, Infiouest, is expected to deliver a finished road in just over a year — a tight schedule that many see as a test of the government’s renewed focus on infrastructure results.
The minister also gave credit to Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his support in ensuring the project takes off smoothly. “With the governor’s help, we are confident this road will be done on time,” Umahi noted.

The full Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria road/highway spans over 700 kilometers. Much of the Kano section, about 240 kilometers, has already been completed by Julius Berger. The remaining 280 kilometers — now split between Sections I, II, and III — are currently under different stages of reconstruction.
To take it further, President Bola Tinubu has directed that the road include solar-powered streetlights and even an extension to the Aminu Kano International Airport. The additional 11 kilometers brings more connectivity to air travelers and is already under construction.
