“Only 200 South-East Youths Signed up as Nigeria Army Recruits Thousands” – Official

A top army officer has raised concern over the low number of young people from the South-East applying to join the Nigerian Army, saying only 200 have signed up so far.

Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator, who is leading the Army Headquarters Recruitment Sensitisation Team in Anambra, shared the news at a meeting with youth leaders and community heads in the state.

According to Ekeator, while thousands of youths from other parts of the country are showing interest—some states recording as many as 4,000 applicants—the South-East is lagging far behind.

“This exercise is a big opportunity,” he said. “But our young people in the South-East are not coming forward. We are encouraging community leaders to return home and speak to their youths.”

He explained that every region has a chance to be fairly represented in the military. But if youths from the South-East do not apply, their slots will go unused—and possibly given to other regions.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Aghambah, said the Anambra State Government is ready to support the army’s call by urging community leaders and traditional rulers to help mobilize at least 10 youths from each community.

“We want our youths to see the benefits of joining the Army—not just as a job, but as a way to serve the country and secure their future,” Aghambah said.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, added that the recruitment is open to young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 22.
