Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised the resourcefulness of Nigerian women as the world commemorates International Women’s Day today.
IWD is observed annually on March 8 to celebrate the cultural, political, social, and economic achievements made by women. It also serves as an opportunity to inspire efforts to end gender biases and discrimination and achieve gender equality.
In a post on his X handle on Friday, Atiku recognised the invaluable role women have played in advancing the progress of the country, noting that the theme of this year’s IWD, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” resonates with his empowerment initiatives for women, particularly the small loan program in Yola, which has helped 45,000 families escape poverty.
He wrote: “I join women worldwide, particularly in Nigeria, to celebrate International Women’s Day with the theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’
“I strongly believe in investing in women. This belief is not a rhetoric. My work in Yola with our small loan program, which has helped 45,000 families escape poverty, has shown me that empowering women improves our families, communities, Nigeria, and the world. -AA”
