Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister Nyesom Wike has directed an intensified crackdown on vandals responsible for stealing sewage manhole covers along Abuja highways.
This comes in the wake of several arrests made by security agencies in response to the growing trend.
Condemning the vandalism as “devilish and reckless,” Wike warned that such acts not only endanger public safety but also sabotage the government’s efforts to maintain essential infrastructure.
“It is disheartening that funds meant for public welfare are being sabotaged by unscrupulous individuals who strip vital infrastructure for selfish gains,” the minister stated in news reports on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
Wike disclosed that ongoing investigations aim to expose the entire network involved in the thefts, including buyers and collaborators.
He stressed that no offender would be spared, as law enforcement agencies have been directed to “track down and prosecute all culprits involved in the crime.”
The minister praised the role of a vigilant citizen whose viral video captured the vandals in action, leading to their arrests.
He described the citizen’s actions as a shining example of “patriotism and civic responsibility.”
“This is the kind of patriotism Nigeria needs. I commend the individual who raised the alarm, and I encourage others to speak out whenever they notice such destructive behavior,” Wike said.
In response to Wike’s directive, relevant agencies such as the FCT Department of Development Control and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) have ramped up efforts to monitor and protect public infrastructure.
These agencies are collaborating with security operatives to prevent further vandalism.
Wike assured the public that additional updates on the investigation and arrests would be shared as the crackdown continues.
