President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed a bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State. This development was announced today by Bwala Daniel, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication.
The new institution aims to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development in the Niger Delta region, particularly in Ogoni land, which has faced environmental degradation due to oil exploration activities.
The university is expected to offer specialized programs in environmental technology, engineering, and related fields, providing a platform for research and innovation.

Speaking this morning, Daniel highlighted that this bold step in Ogoni land is in fulfilment to the President’s Renewed Hope agenda of promoting national unity and fostering inclusivity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. Daniel said “To President Tinubu, there are no minority ethnicities in Nigeria. He believes in the opening stanza of our national anthem, which states that though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood, we stand.”
The establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology is part of a broader initiative to expand access to higher education and promote regional development. Earlier, the Nigerian Senate passed bills to establish federal universities in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, including the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni.
This development is expected to create educational opportunities for students in the region and contribute to the socioeconomic growth of Rivers State. The university’s focus on environmental technology aligns with global trends towards sustainable development and environmental conservation.
As the university prepares to commence operations, stakeholders anticipate that it will play a pivotal role in addressing environmental issues in the Niger Delta and serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country.
