President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is about to embarked on a diplomatic trip to France ahead of his participation in the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The announcement was made by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement released on Wednesday.
The statement, titled “President Tinubu departs for France ahead of the AU summit in Addis Ababa,” revealed that the President will join fellow African leaders for the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU Heads of State and Government, both scheduled to take place from February 12 to 16, 2025. The President is expected to arrive in Addis Ababa early next week in preparation for the landmark gathering.
The AU Summit is the highest decision-making body of the African Union, where leaders from all 55 member states come together to discuss critical issues facing the continent. The Executive Council session will kick off the summit with foreign ministers and senior officials shaping policy recommendations, which will be presented to the Assembly of Heads of State. These discussions are set to cover a range of challenges, including peace and security, economic integration, climate change, and democratic governance.
The central forum, the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government, is where the continent’s leaders directly engage on these matters, forging resolutions that guide Africa’s collective action in the coming months and years. Previous summits have addressed themes such as Silencing the Guns, Infrastructure Development, and Youth Empowerment, and the 2025 edition will likely focus on urgent matters such as economic recovery post-COVID-19, strengthening healthcare systems, and climate adaptation.
President Tinubu’s participation in the summit underscores Nigeria’s important role in Africa’s diplomatic, peace, and security initiatives. With the continent facing significant challenges, the summit presents an opportunity for African leaders to strengthen cooperation and work towards a stable, prosperous future for Africa.
As President Tinubu prepares for this crucial engagement in Addis Ababa, his trip to France highlights the global importance of his leadership and the international partnerships that continue to shape Nigeria’s involvement in key continental and global discussions.
