In commemoration of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Ibas Eket has unveiled a people-centered plan aimed at improving the lives of both workers and pensioners across the state.
Delivering his speech on May 1 in Port-Harcourt, Ibas commended the resilience and commitment of workers even in difficult times. He assured them that his administration is not only taking note of their sacrifices but actively working to reward them.
“My dear good people of Rivers State, especially our hardworking men and women across all sectors, this day belongs to you,” he said. “Your character, discipline and dedication are the reason our government and economy continue to stand.”
But beyond commendation, the administrator rolled out a series of practical steps to support workers and retirees;
Recognizing the financial strain caused by the removal of fuel subsidies, Ibas announced the release of funds to reactivate the state’s Intervention B Scheme, a transportation program aimed at reducing daily commuting costs for workers. He added that the government is also considering adding more buses to the fleet to make transportation more accessible and affordable.
Ibas also revealed that a leadership training program for civil servants will be launched in the next two weeks. This initiative, he said, is intended to build capacity, enhance professionalism, and improve service delivery in the public sector. “This is not just about recognizing workers; it is about equipping them,” he stated. “We want our civil servants to be better prepared to serve the people of Rivers State with excellence.”

The Sole Administrator further pledged to prioritize the long-overdue payment of gratuities and the N32,000 consequential adjustment for pensioners, in line with the federal government’s directive. “I am giving serious attention to the welfare of our pensioners,” he said. “These are people who have served our state faithfully and deserve to enjoy their retirement in dignity.”
Ibas, who assumed office on March 20, 2025, emphasized that his mission is not only to restore political stability and law and order, but also to rebuild institutions and trust between the government and the people.
“We are rebuilding not just the institutions of governance, but also trust,” he declared. “And you—the workers—are central to that process.”
“Let us move forward together with unity and the firm belief that our best days lie ahead,” he concluded.
