The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is still reviewing the recent court ruling on the leadership crisis within the Labour Party and has not yet made any official changes or decisions.
This was made known in a statement released on Thursday by Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman. The Commission was responding to reports in the media claiming that it had already recognized new leaders for the Labour Party and reinstated a National Secretary for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
INEC described those reports as “false and misleading,” adding that no decision has been taken on either matter. According to the Commission, the names currently on its website were uploaded based on earlier court orders and are not related to the recent Supreme Court judgement involving the Labour Party.
“In the same way, the name of the National Secretary of the PDP on our website was neither deleted nor restored,” the statement read.
INEC added that, as a law-abiding institution, it is taking its time to study the Supreme Court’s ruling before making any public pronouncements.
The Commission further promised to share its decision with the public once it concludes its review.
