Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has cautioned young Nigerians against rushing into politics with unrealistic expectations, saying true leadership is something earned through years of experience, not something claimed by mere ambition.
Speaking at the launch of a book in honour of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Obi used the platform to share both personal memories and deep lessons from his political journey. But his strongest message was directed at the younger generation.
“Leadership is not something you just jump into. You don’t leave school and become president or governor. There’s a journey, and you must walk it,” Obi said.
He praised Lamido for his long and eventful political path, describing him as a man whose story deserves to be studied. Obi revealed he had once driven late into the night—from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.—just to meet Lamido in his village after initially arriving in the state capital. “That alone tells you how safe Jigawa is,” he added, applauding the former governor’s leadership.
In a surprising revelation, Obi shared a little-known link between their families. He disclosed that their fathers once worked as area managers for the same company, SC Chris, in different parts of Nigeria. “That’s how I knew him—first through trade, not politics,” he said. He also credited the company with helping him buy property in Lagos as a young trader.
Obi, who is known for his modesty and principle, declined to make a public donation at the event out of respect for elder statesmen present. Instead, he quietly confirmed that his financial contribution had already been transferred to the organizers. “You’ll see it once you check the account,” he said, smiling.
Beyond his donation, Obi pledged to purchase additional copies of the book for Nigerian universities. According to him, students need to read about real political journeys to understand that titles are earned through hard work and dedication—not shortcuts.
The event, attended by prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, provided a moment of reflection and mentorship.
