Nigeria’s former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan has shown Nigerians that dreams don’t expire — as she walked the stage to receive a PhD in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, at the age of 62.
Speaking at the 43rd postgraduate convocation of the institution situated in Rivers State, Dame Patience said it was filled with celebration of courage, lifelong learning, and personal growth for her, noting that “No age is too late to achieve your academic dreams.”
The former first lady used her achievement to speak directly to the hearts of women and young people across Nigeria. “If I can do it, you can also do it,” she passionately encouraged Nigerians to never give up on education, no matter their age or stage in life.
The former First Lady didn’t just speak as a public figure — she spoke as a student who went through lectures, assignments, and exams. She also acknowledged the immense support from her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and their children, describing them as her “biggest cheerleaders.”

In her words, education remains the key to building a better Nigeria: “Whether young or old, education gives you the power to refresh your mind and discover new opportunities.”

Mrs. Jonathan dedicated her doctorate to Nigerian women, especially those who continue to serve their families and communities with little recognition. She also vowed to double her efforts in empowering vulnerable groups, promising to use her voice and new academic experience to advance the causes of women, children, and youths.
