Following the defection of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno from People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressive Congress (APC), his commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, has officially resigned, on the grounds that he wont defect to APC.
Ememobong who until today also served as Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, is the first to exit the Governor’s cabinet since his defection. His resignation was submitted and officially acknowledged on Thursday, June 6, 2025.
Citing personal conviction and political principles, Ememobong made it clear he would not be part of the new political direction being taken by the governor.
“You have directed that any appointee who is unwilling to accompany you to switch from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress should resign. Ipso facto, based on my personal conviction, I will be unable to join the APC,” Ememobong wrote in his formal resignation letter.
The former commissioner, who was brought into government under former Governor Udom Emmanuel and later retained by Governor Eno, described his time in service as “enlightening” and expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him. He served in two critical portfolios—first as Commissioner for Information and Strategy, and later in Special Duties and the Ibom Deep Sea Port project.
“Today, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive… While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s personal decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn,” he stated, adding that his choice is “borne out of my belief in politics with principles,” Ememobong publicly declared.
Though his resignation could be interpreted as defiance, Ememobong was careful to reaffirm his respect for Governor Umo Eno, describing their relationship as personal and brotherly.
“This decision does not affect my personal relationship with the Governor… I have and will continue to have tremendous respect for him, even outside EXCO,” he said.
“I understand this decision may not please everyone… but I trust that at the end, all things work together for good,” he said.
