Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
In a resignation letter personally signed and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Adamawa State, Atiku described his exit as “heartbreaking” but necessary, citing that the party has taken a direction that no longer reflects its founding principles.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” Atiku wrote. “But I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken.”
He acknowledged irreconcilable differences within the party and said it was with a heavy heart that he reached the decision.

Atiku, who is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of the PDP, also expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party gave him over the years.
The letter was officially received and acknowledged by party officials on July 14, 2025.
