Keffi Prison: The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed that 16 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
According to the Service’s spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, the escape happened after the inmates of Keffi Prison breached security and overpowered personnel on duty. Five officers were injured in the attack, with two in serious condition and currently receiving treatment at a government hospital.
Seven of the fleeing inmates have already been recaptured, while nine remain at large.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility shortly after the incident. He has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances of the breakout, warning that any staff found complicit will face strict disciplinary action.

A coordinated manhunt is now underway in collaboration with other security agencies. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security post.
The Service reassured Nigerians of its commitment to public safety and the security of all custodial centres nationwide.
