The Rivers State Government has set a new course for the future of education as Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, inaugurated governing councils for four state-owned tertiary institutions, charging them to reposition the schools as hubs of excellence, innovation, and technical leadership.
The councils were inaugurated for Rivers State University (RSU), Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, and Kenule Benson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, in a ceremony held at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Ibas, who described education as the foundation of development, said the appointments signaled a new phase in Rivers State’s commitment to building institutions that can compete globally. “We must move beyond rhetoric and ensure our universities and polytechnics become engines of growth, producing graduates who are problem-solvers, innovators, and nation-builders,” he said.
For the universities, Ibas emphasized the need to strengthen academic research, improve governance, and foster collaborations with global partners. For the polytechnics, he highlighted Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a vital tool for industrial growth and job creation, calling on the councils to prioritize innovation, student welfare, and infrastructure upgrades.
