Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the immediate commencement of renovation work at the State Secretariat following a fire outbreak that affected a section of the complex on Monday.
Fubara, who visited the scene early Tuesday morning to assess the extent of damage, described the incident as unfortunate but thanked God that no life was lost. He disclosed that the affected area was the section of the Secretariat that houses a crèche for babies.
“I came here this morning to see for myself what happened yesterday. It’s really unfortunate, but we give God the glory that no life was lost and that the damage was limited to one section,” Fubara said.
He assured civil servants that the incident would not disrupt government activities, stressing that the situation had now made it imperative to begin the long-awaited rehabilitation of the State Secretariat.

“We have been talking about the renovation and refurbishing of our foremost Secretariat. With this incident, there is no reason not to start anymore. Whatever is required by this government to commence that process, we will immediately swing into action,” the governor declared.
The governor also commended the Rivers State Fire Service for their swift response, attributing their effectiveness to the government’s prior investment in emergency infrastructure before the declaration of the state of emergency.

“Before the emergency rule, we took our time to invest in the fire service. I wonder what would have happened if we didn’t have a formidable and functional fire service. This is why we will continue to make such strategic investments that lift Rivers people and keep them safe,” he said.
Governor Fubara further expressed appreciation to the civil servants for their resilience and cooperation, assuring that his administration remains committed to their welfare and the improvement of government facilities.
