The mood was heavy with emotion on Saturday as the wife of the Governor of Rivers State, Lady Valerie Siminalayi Fubara, attended the funeral service of her late cousin, Hon. Prince Obiandu Ohochukwu, at Nkarahia Community, Isiokpo Town, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Lady Fubara, visibly moved, made a brief stopover at the residence of the late Ohochukwu before proceeding to St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral, Isiokpo, where the funeral service took place. She joined members of the bereaved family, relatives, friends, and dignitaries who gathered to pay their last respects to a man many described as kind-hearted, principled, and deeply committed to public service.
The late Hon. Prince Obiandu Ohochukwu was a respected chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a former Commissioner in the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, widely known for his dedication to grassroots development and mentorship of young politicians.
Delivering a sermon titled “The Number of Our Days on Earth,” drawn from Psalm 90:10 and 12, the Dean of the Church of Nigeria, Archbishop of the Niger Delta Province, and Bishop of the Diocese of Ikwerre, His Grace, The Most Rev. Dr. Blessing Enyindah, urged the congregation to live purposeful lives, stressing that the brevity of human existence demands wisdom and value-driven living.
“It is not how long or short we live that matters, but the value we leave behind on earth,” Archbishop Enyindah said. “The Scripture reminds us that our time on earth is limited; therefore, we must live wisely and with eternity in view.”
He further observed that while the average life expectancy in Nigeria hovers around 50 years — far below the global average of 70 — true fulfilment comes from living meaningfully and touching lives positively.
The solemn service brought together prominent figures from within and outside Rivers State, including political associates, community leaders, and well-wishers, all united in grief and reflection. Many described the late Prince Ohochukwu as a pillar of strength in his community and a bridge-builder who believed in fairness, humility, and public good.
As hymns of faith filled the cathedral, the atmosphere was one of sorrow, gratitude, and renewed faith, reminding all present of the Archbishop’s message — that life, however brief, must be lived with purpose and compassion
