Police Arrests 3 Pickpockets Syndicates, Recovers Stolen Phones, Cash

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspected criminals, including an ex-convict who was released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre just five days ago, for theft and pickpocketing operations across different parts of the state.

The suspects were identified as 25-year-old Segun Kolawole, a recently freed inmate; Sodiq Isa, 27; and Adekanmbi Ganiu, 21. They were arrested in separate operations carried out by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the ex-convict was arrested at Oshodi Market around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, after operatives noticed his suspicious movement.

Upon searching him, the officers recovered ₦80,000 in cash and an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone, which were later traced to a recent burglary incident in Opebi. Investigators said Kolawole had broken into the residence of a sleeping trader where he allegedly stole ₦200,000 and the mobile device.

Part of the stolen money was used to purchase new clothes and footwear, which were also recovered as exhibits.

In a related development, RRS operatives arrested Sodiq Isa and Adekanmbi Ganiu around 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, for attempting to snatch phones from commuters in different locations within Lagos.

Preliminary findings revealed that the two operate during peak traffic periods, targeting passengers and pedestrians in crowded areas, including motor parks and bus stops. Their method involves quickly snatching mobile phones or wallets and fleeing before victims can react. However, the police said the swift response of the patrol teams prevented them from escaping.

The statement added that all recovered items have been returned to their owners.

The three suspects are now in custody and are undergoing further interrogation at the RRS Headquarters. They will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, commended the RRS operatives for their vigilance and professionalism. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and aggressive crime prevention strategies to ensure the safety of residents across the state.

“We will continue to clamp down on criminal elements and ensure that Lagos remains safe for all law-abiding citizens,” the Commissioner said.
