The newly decorated Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has pledged to restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force, promising to run a professional, disciplined, and accountable police system under his leadership.
Disu made the commitment on Wednesday in Abuja shortly after he was officially decorated as Acting IGP by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Speaking with State House correspondents, the new police chief said rebuilding trust between the police and citizens would be one of his top priorities, noting that effective policing cannot succeed without the confidence and cooperation of the public.
He said the era of impunity within the Force must end, adding that officers and men would be retrained to respect human rights and uphold professional standards at all times.
According to him, his administration will enforce zero tolerance for corruption and misconduct, while ensuring that officers carry out their duties with integrity and respect for the rule of law.
Disu stressed that citizens must be seen as partners in security, explaining that community cooperation is key to intelligence gathering and crime prevention across the country.
“One of the first things I will tell my officers is that the citizens are their bosses,” he said, adding that police personnel must treat members of the public with dignity and fairness.
The Acting IGP also promised to improve the welfare and motivation of police officers, noting that a well-motivated workforce is more effective in delivering quality service and maintaining public safety.
He expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigeria Police Force to tackle security challenges across the country, describing officers as hardworking and committed personnel who only need the right leadership, training, and support to perform optimally.
Disu further described his decoration by President Tinubu as both an honour and a challenge, saying he is determined to build on his past experience in different commands to deliver improved security for Nigerians.
