The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has said it lawfully detained former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, after finding electronic devices and sensitive government documents at his Abuja home.
The ICPC said it got a 14-day court order to hold El-Rufai, which will end on March 5, 2026. The agency asked the High Court to throw out his human rights case, calling it without merit.
The search took place on February 19 at El-Rufai’s residence in Asokoro, in the presence of his wife, Hadiza, and son, Mohammed Bello. The commission said El-Rufai refused to give access to the devices and chose to stay silent until he is formally charged in court.
The investigation follows claims of corruption during his time as governor, including large unexplained cash withdrawals, suspicious payments, transfers to unknown accounts, misuse of loans, and breaches of procurement rules.

El-Rufai denied wrongdoing, saying the case is politically motivated because of his opposition role in the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He said he will only respond in court.
