‘Jonathan Is Coming Back’ — PDP Defies Police Blockade, Endorses Ex-President for 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally endorsed former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following what party leaders described as a “special convention” held under tense conditions amid alleged police restrictions.

The development came after senior party figures and delegates gathered for what was initially planned as a ratification ceremony but was reportedly disrupted when access to the original venue was blocked by security operatives. Despite the setback, party leaders proceeded with an alternative session, insisting that the “main event had already been concluded politically” through internal consultations and prior resolutions.

Addressing the gathering, party officials declared that the exercise would continue regardless of the disruption, framing the event as a defence of internal democracy and political freedom. One of the leaders stated that the party would not be prevented from selecting its candidate, stressing that “democracy must survive” and that the PDP remained committed to providing what it called “good governance and credible leadership.”

During the proceedings, a motion was formally moved by a state party chairman to adopt Jonathan as the consensus presidential candidate for 2027. The motion was seconded by another senior party figure representing a nationwide party network, both of whom emphasized Jonathan’s past leadership credentials and described the decision as the outcome of broad consultations among party structures.

The motion was subsequently put to a voice vote, where delegates overwhelmingly supported the endorsement. Party officials declared the motion carried, describing the decision as final and binding within the party’s internal processes.

Following the adoption, the convention leadership announced that a certificate of return would be issued to Jonathan, describing him as a unifying figure and “a man of integrity, experience, and national appeal.” Party elders at the event also praised his previous tenure as president, highlighting his international engagements and reputation in conflict mediation roles across Africa.

A major theme of the gathering was criticism of what party leaders described as growing threats to democratic institutions in Nigeria. Speakers argued that electoral independence had been weakened over time and expressed concern over what they termed increasing political interference in party activities and electoral processes.

One of the key speakers reflected on Nigeria’s democratic transition, recalling the early negotiations that led to the establishment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He argued that the spirit of electoral independence had deteriorated, claiming that the current electoral environment no longer reflects the ideals agreed upon at the dawn of civilian rule.

The event also took on a broader political tone, with participants framing the endorsement as a symbolic resistance to what they described as attempts to suppress opposition mobilisation. Some party leaders insisted that “what they sought to stop has already happened,” suggesting that the endorsement process was irreversible.

However, the legitimacy of the gathering and its outcomes is expected to generate political debate, particularly given reports of internal restructuring within the PDP and ongoing legal and leadership disputes affecting the party’s national framework.

Despite these controversies, PDP leaders maintained that due process had been followed, citing internal constitutional provisions and prior party meetings as justification for the endorsement. They also announced plans for a larger rally to formally present Jonathan as the party’s flagbearer at a later date.

As the 2027 political landscape begins to take shape, the PDP’s move is likely to intensify early political realignments and trigger wider reactions across Nigeria’s political spectrum, particularly regarding the return of a former head of state to the electoral arena.
