The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Obi emerged as the party’s flag bearer at the NDC Special Convention held in Abuja following the conclusion of the party’s nationwide primary election.
The convention was attended by key party leaders, including NDC National Chairman, Seriake Dickson, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who arrived at the venue alongside Obi.
The development comes weeks after Obi and Kwankwaso left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the NDC, citing internal disagreements and ongoing legal disputes within the party.
In his acceptance speech shortly after being declared the party’s presidential candidate, Obi pledged to lead with integrity, fairness and transparency if elected president.
He said his administration would uphold democratic principles and ensure strict adherence to the rule of law by both public officials and citizens.
“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people, and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party,” Obi said.
He further promised to institutionalise respect for opposition parties and encourage constructive engagement in governance, stressing that democracy under his leadership would be anchored on accountability and transparency.
“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld and remain sacrosanct in accordance with our constitutional framework,” he added.
Obi’s emergence as the NDC presidential candidate marks a significant development in the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
