Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused billionaire banker and founder of Stanbic IBTC, Atedo Peterside, of publishing a fake opinion poll in 2023 to favor Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, without disclosing his personal interest.
The Minister made the allegation during a television interview, where he strongly criticized Peterside’s role in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election. According to Wike, Peterside used his private foundation to conduct and circulate a manipulated opinion poll that falsely suggested Obi had more support than he actually did.
“He didn’t disclose to the public that Peter Obi was his preferred candidate. Instead, he used his foundation to release a poll that made it seem like Obi was the people’s choice,” Wike said. “That’s not just dishonest, it’s unfair to the Nigerian people.”

Wike also questioned Peterside’s contributions to Rivers State, claiming the businessman had distanced himself from local affairs. “What has he done for Rivers State apart from building a business for himself? When we were fighting to make Sim Fubara governor, where was he?” Wike asked.

The former governor expressed disappointment over Peterside’s recent comments referring to local government appointments as a “referral of rascality.” He said such remarks were insulting to educated professionals and political leaders in the state.
“I take serious exception to that statement. You don’t insult people who have worked hard and served the state just because you disagree with a decision,” he added.
Wike said Peterside’s actions reflect a double standard, stressing that those with influence should use it responsibly. “If God has blessed you, use your position to build people up, not tear them down with disrespectful labels,” he said.
