Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that the 2025 Budget/Appropriation Bill will be transmitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assent without delay once it is passed into law.
Akpabio gave this assurance during a plenary session at the National Assembly, where he emphasized the Senate’s commitment to ensuring a seamless budgetary process.
He commended lawmakers for their diligence in scrutinizing the budget, noting that their efforts would produce a practical and effective financial plan for Nigeria’s development.
“I congratulate all senators and indeed the National Assembly as a whole for the way and manner you have scrutinized the budget of 2025. At the end, we will have a workable document for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Akpabio stated.
In addition to ensuring a smooth passage of the 2025 budget, Akpabio also praised lawmakers for their foresight in extending the capital provisions of the 2024 budget until June 2025. This move, he said, would prevent disruptions in government operations and ensure that ongoing projects continue uninterrupted.
“I also thank you for your foresight in extending the capital provisions of the 2024 budget to June so that government business does not grind to a halt,” he remarked.
The former Governor further clarified that, under the constitution, President Tinubu has the authority to undertake necessary expenses within the 2025 budget framework until June. However, he assured that the legislature would ensure the budget is transmitted and signed into law as soon as possible.
“The constitution allows Mr. President to undertake the current expenses in the 2025 budget, even up to June this year. But we will definitely get the budget across to him as soon as possible,” Akpabio added.
The assurance of a speedy budget transmission aligns with the administration’s objective of maintaining a stable fiscal calendar. The timely passage of the budget is expected to enhance economic planning, ensure smooth government operations, and boost investor confidence.
As the National Assembly finalizes its deliberations on the 2025 budget, the legislature is expected to ensure that the financial plan effectively addresses key national priorities, including infrastructure, security, education, and economic growth.
