Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has lashed out at the APC government for imposing heavy taxes on struggling Nigerians while spending billions on what he described as “wasteful extravagance.”
While delivering his Independence Day message to mark Nigeria @ 65, Obi accused the ruling party of driving millions into poverty with its “brutal revenue-driven policies” while indulging in luxury projects that do not benefit citizens.

“This government taxes struggling citizens and small businesses heavily while indulging in extravagance,” Obi pointed out. He cited the N25 billion renovation of the Vice President’s residence, which he said costs more than the combined budgets of six federal university teaching hospitals, and over N10 billion allocated for car parks and canteens in the National Assembly.

Obi further decried Nigeria’s rising debt, widespread hunger, and worsening insecurity. According to him, more than 150 million Nigerians lack access to healthcare, education, water, and sanitation, while UNICEF and the WFP project that 33 million Nigerians will face acute hunger in 2025.

He however expressed faith in the nation and urging Nigerians not to lose hope, stressing that with accountable leadership, the country can still rise from decline. “Despite these challenges, I remain convinced that a great Nigeria is still possible,” he said.
