The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has condemned the attack on some members of the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi in Enugu state.
Peter Obi and his supporters were threatened as some yet-to-be-identified gunmen attacked members of the party, who were holding a meeting in Awgu Community of Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State over the weekend.
It was gathered that the gunmen, numbering about four, unleashed attack on unsuspecting party faithful at the venue of the meeting, shooting sporadically to disperse the party members.
Reacting to the incident, Ndubisi Enechionyia, Enugu State Chairman of APGA in a statement Tuesday said the attack on LP and their supporters was orchestrated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to intimidate the people of the state ahead of next year’s election.
“Today, we condemn in its entirety the repeated and dirty campaigns being carried out against Mr Peter Obi’s supporters in Enugu by some elements on the payroll of Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, pretending to be Biafra agitators
“We received the news that members of Peter Obi support groups were attacked by thugs on Wednesday at Nenwe in Aninri local government area, and on Sunday at Awgu in Awgu local government area.
“We in the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, have always believed that democracy allows for freedom of association and expression.
“It is condemnable that while the rest of the country is working to create a better Democratic culture, Enugu State seems to be trying to fully return to the days of political violence, murders, and full suppression of opposition and alternative opinion.
“In the past Enugu State PDP has sponsored attacks like the ones at Awgu and Aninri against their own members and similar incidents occurred during the last local council elections in the State.
“The elections of 2023 in Enugu will be for whom the people choose, no longer the usual jamboree of favouritism,” the statement read.
