The Paramount Ruler of the Tiv Nation (Tor Tiv), His Royal Majesty, Prof. James Ayatse, has raised his voice in anger and frustration over the ongoing killings and displacement in Benue State. In a passionate speech during a peace consultation in Makurdi, the Tor Tiv declared that the people of Benue can no longer tolerate the violence caused by criminal herders.
He condemned the constant attacks on farming communities, stating that what used to be a peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders has now turned into a reign of terror. According to him, the culture of grazing with sticks and peaceful interaction is long gone. Today, it has been replaced by heavily armed criminals who kill, destroy farms, rape women, and burn down homes.
“They are not herders anymore,” he said firmly. “They are criminals with AK-47s. They come, destroy our farms, chase us out of our homes, and take over our villages. This is not our culture and we cannot accept it.”
The Tor Tiv challenged leaders of herder communities to stop pretending they do not know the attackers. “You say you don’t know them, but they dress like you, talk like you, and move like you. If you truly want peace, deal with the criminals among you first.”
Drawing from the Bible, he likened the situation to the story of the prodigal son. He said just like the lost son returned home and was embraced, those who are willing to repent and return peacefully should be welcomed. But he emphasized that peace can only come when the violent ones are identified and dealt with.

He expressed deep concern about the level of land takeover in Benue. In his own kingdom, he said over 15 communities have been captured by these violent groups. The traditional ruler described the situation as unbearable, calling on both government and community leaders to take decisive action.
The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, who was present at the meeting, echoed the concerns. He painted a sorrowful picture of displaced families, elderly women, and children living in camps without fathers or homes. He said the people of Benue are peace-loving, but they have suffered enough.
Governor Alia also shared his efforts in collaborating with governors of neighbouring states like Nasarawa and Plateau to find a lasting solution. He stressed the need for a united front in tackling the security crisis, expressing hope that the peace summit would mark the beginning of true healing and restoration.

The Tor Tiv, on behalf of traditional rulers in the state, pledged full support to any initiative that would help bring peace, justice, and a return to ancestral lands. He warned that any force—whether uniformed or not—that continues to oppress and kill innocent people on Benue soil would face the wrath of the land.
“Enough is enough. Let peace return, and let the people go back to their homes,” Tor Tiv Declared.
