Reactions have trailed the killing of a Lagos-based Lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, by a police officer in the Ajah area of Nigeria’s commercial city. Her death has sparked anger on social media, with many calling out the police and demanding immediate and open prosecution of the officer. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali, has declared that a speedy investigation is conducted.
Lagos state governor Babjide Sanwoolu in his reaction said the death of Bolanle was avoidable. He urged everyone to remain calm and assured Justice would be served.
“With utter shock and sadness, I received the news of the unfortunate and avoidable death of Barrister Bolanle Raheem at the hands of a police officer at Ajiwe. My condolence to her family, friends, and associates. I can assure you that Justice will be served. The Lagos State police command has arrested, disarmed, and detained the officer(s) involved in the incident.”
On his part, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, also condoled the Lawyer’s family. He called on the police to hasten the investigation and serve Justice.
“I express my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the Nigeria Bar Association, particularly its Lagos chapter. May her soul rest in peace. I call on the police authorities and the Justice system to expedite action on the matter, as Justice delayed is Justice denied. This will serve as a deterrent to the irresponsible shooting of innocent citizens by law enforcement agents.”
“The shooting of Bolanle Raheem by a police officer is heartbreaking and stands condemned. This latest shooting calls to attention the urgent need for Police reforms that will sanitise the Force and bring it in line with best policing practices.”Atiku said.
