Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement, made on Thursday afternoon, marks a significant realignment in the political landscape of the South-South region.
Governor Eno was formally received into the APC by top party leaders, including the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma.
The defection was sealed at a high-level political gathering in Abuja, attended by several APC governors, party stalwarts, and National Assembly members. Governor Eno’s move comes amid growing speculation about realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking shortly after his defection, Umo Eno said his decision was driven by a desire to align Akwa Ibom with the centre for the sake of development. “My people deserve the dividends of democracy. It is time to move forward in unity and purpose,” he said.

Senate President Akpabio, who hails from Akwa Ibom and has long been seen as a political rival of Eno, described the defection as “a homecoming and a step in the right direction.” He praised Governor Eno for what he called a “bold and patriotic decision.”
Governor Hope Uzodimma also lauded Eno’s entry into the APC fold, assuring him of full support from the Progressive Governors Forum.
