In a heart-wrenching incident early Monday morning, the Ogun State sector of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that nine passengers have lost their lives in a fatal road crash near the Ayetoro area on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. The accident, which involved a TOYOTA HIACE bus (registration UYY165ZY) and a TRUCK (registration DKA244XC), has shocked communities and raised urgent questions about road safety in Nigeria.

According to the FRSC, a total of 13 individuals were involved in the accident, comprising 10 adult males and 3 adult females. The devastating toll recorded 9 fatalities (6 male and 3 female) and left 3 others injured. The injured have been rushed to Famobis Hospital in Mowe for urgent medical treatment, while the deceased have been taken to Idera morgue in Sagamu.

Florence Okpe, the Chief Route Commander and Public Education Officer of the Ogun State Sector, confirmed the tragic incident during a press briefing in Abeokuta, the state capital. She attributed the crash to factors such as excessive speed and driver fatigue, which allegedly led to a loss of control, causing the bus to collide with a stationary truck. “The Sector Commander is pained over the recklessness of some drivers for not observing the stipulated speed limit and refusing to take the mandatory 15-minute rest after a 4-hour journey,” Okpe stated.

This catastrophic event has once again put the spotlight on road safety standards along one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. Authorities are now calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and mandatory rest periods for drivers, aiming to prevent future tragedies. Local communities and road safety advocates are urging for increased awareness and timely interventions to safeguard lives on Nigerian roads.

Families of the victims have been encouraged to reach out to the Mowe Unit Command for further information and support.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
