Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has passed away.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, his death was confirmed at the early hours of Friday morning, March 7, 2025.
Okupe, a seasoned politician and medical doctor, was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. He served in various capacities, including as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Jonathan. Over the years, he remained an outspoken voice on national issues, frequently engaging in political discourse.

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun and other politic al/public figures have continued to express their grief over the passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe.
Dr. Okupe, who passed away at the age of 72, was widely regarded as a significant figure in Nigeria’s political and media landscape, having served as a spokesperson for various administrations. His death, which came shortly after the passing of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo, has left a void in the political space, according to tributes from colleagues and associates.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, under whose administration Okupe served as a Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, described him as “a courageous and patriotic Nigerian who dedicated his life to the service of the country.” Giving his mourning speech, Jonathan highlighted Okupe’s unwavering commitment to democracy, noting that his contributions to national discourse would be greatly missed.

Similarly, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, who once had Okupe as the Director-General of his campaign organization, expressed his condolences. Obi noted that despite political differences, Okupe was a man of deep convictions who always prioritized national interest over personal ambition.
Obi said, “Doyin Okupe was a man who stood by his principles and always sought to bridge political divides in the best interest of Nigeria. His wealth of experience and statesmanship will be greatly missed. I pray for strength and comfort for his family at this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party where Okupe spent a significant part of his political career, described him as an invaluable asset who contributed immensely to shaping political communications in the country. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said, “Dr. Okupe was a steadfast party man who served in various capacities and helped build the foundation of political engagement as we know it today. His passion for democracy and good governance will forever be remembered.”
Chief Olusegun Osoba, a former governor of Ogun State, also paid tribute to Okupe, describing him as “a formidable voice in Nigerian politics who contributed significantly to political dialogue and strategy. His passing is a great loss to Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.”
