‘Data Has No Boundaries’ – NDPC Collaborates Uganda to Promote Regional Data Protection

In a strong show of African unity in the digital space, Nigeria has partnered with Uganda to promote better data protection across the region.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) recently hosted a team from Uganda’s Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) on a learning visit to Abuja. The goal was simple: share ideas, strengthen regional ties, and build a safer digital future for all Africans.

Welcoming the delegation, NDPC boss Dr. Vincent Olatunji said the partnership shows how African countries can grow stronger by learning from one another.

“Our success is based on trying new things,” he said. “We used a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. We started small, and now over 250 organisations are helping us drive compliance.”
“Don’t be afraid of experimenting. Don’t be afraid of failing.”

Nigeria also shared how it is training local experts to handle data protection matters — a move that boosts job creation and builds investor confidence.

Uganda’s team leader, Mr. Stephen Mugabe, praised the NDPC’s progress and professionalism.
“We are impressed by Nigeria’s approach to awareness, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building,” he said. “There’s a lot we can take home and adapt.”

During the visit, the Ugandan delegation engaged with NDPC department heads on key areas such as handling data breaches, raising public awareness, and forming international partnerships

This collaboration marks another big step towards building a trusted and secure digital environment across Africa.
