The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has called on the Police Service Commission (PSC) to make data protection a top priority in its operations.
He made this call when he received a delegation from the PSC led by its Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Salihu Argungu (mni), at the NDPC headquarters, in Abuja.
Dr. Olatunji commended the PSC Chairman for his open and collaborative approach to leadership. He noted that the PSC, as the agency responsible for recruitment, promotions, and oversight of police personnel, handles sensitive personal information and must ensure full compliance with Nigeria’s Data Protection Act.
“You are a major data controller and processor. Data protection must be a top priority,” he said.
Dr. Olatunji offered free training on data protection and privacy for PSC staff, explaining key steps such as appointing a Data Protection Officer (DPO) and developing a clear privacy notice. He stressed the need for synergy between both commissions to protect citizens’ data and boost Nigeria’s image globally, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a modern and responsible government.
In his remarks, DIG Argungu (rtd) welcomed the partnership, accepted the offer for staff training, and pledged PSC’s commitment to full compliance with the law. He also supported the idea of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation between the two agencies.
A joint working group has been set up to develop the framework for this collaboration.
