Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has urged the people of the state to rise above recent political challenges and work together to heal and rebuild a stronger, more united Rivers. Speaking during the 2025 Democracy Day celebration in Port Harcourt, the Governor said democracy must not only be celebrated but actively protected and practised with sincerity.
Reflecting on the political tension that recently rocked the state, Governor Fubara admitted that Rivers has seen tough times. However, he described those experiences as a wake-up call and a chance to build a better path forward.
“This democracy belongs to all of us,” he declared. “If we don’t protect it, we risk losing everything we’ve worked for.”
Fubara stressed the importance of inclusive leadership, justice, and peace, saying that his administration will remain committed to the rule of law and protecting the rights of every citizen, no matter their background or political views.

Democracy: A Time to Put the People First
Fubara explained that the focus of his government is to serve the people through openness, fairness, and accountability. He said policies are being put in place to promote transparency, strengthen security, and support all communities equally.
“No one will be left behind. Rivers State is for everyone—not just those in government or one political group,” he stated.
He noted that real democracy goes beyond elections and political speeches. It involves listening to the people, acting in their interest, and creating systems that protect their freedoms.
The Governor used the opportunity to honour Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democracy and acknowledged those who fought hard to make it possible. He said their sacrifices must never be forgotten.
At the same time, he urged citizens not to treat democracy as a finished product, but as a living system that requires care, courage, and participation from all.
“Democracy is not just about power—it’s about purpose. And that purpose is to build a society where everyone can thrive,” he said.
Governor Fubara called on the people of Rivers to be patriotic, courageous, and united in the face of challenges. He said now is the time to put past divisions aside and focus on building a peaceful and prosperous future together.
