Amid rising tension and the recent sealing of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters in Abuja, the real battle for the soul of the party is not about buildings—it’s about leadership and survival.
Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Spokesperson of the Opposition Lawmakers Coalition and a PDP leader in Imo State, says the sealing of the Wadata House is not the story Nigerians should focus on. According to him, the deeper issue is how the PDP has allowed what he called “political traitors” to weaken the party from within.
In a statement on Sunday, Ugochinyere said the time for excuses is over and called on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to rise to the occasion. “Despite the madness going on, PDP NEC must hold, and a temporary headquarters rented immediately,” he said.
He added that some top figures in the party, including acting chairman Iliya Damagun and national secretary Samuel Anyanwu, have done more harm than good, and their continued presence in the party is a betrayal of its founding vision.
Ugochinyere accused governors like Ahmadu Fintiri and Bala Mohammed of looking the other way while Damagun illegally held on to power—a position meant for the North Central region, according to PDP’s zoning arrangement.
He laid out urgent actions that must be taken to save the party. First, the new national secretary, Udo Okoye, should be officially ratified. Then, Damagun must be removed from office and replaced with a competent leader from the North Central zone. The disciplinary report led by Tom Ikimi, which recommends the expulsion of Anyanwu and other anti-party members loyal to Nyesom Wike, must be adopted without delay.
Ugochinyere also urged the NEC to use its emergency powers to suspend Wike and his loyalists and to set up a disciplinary committee to investigate their actions. He stressed that a new temporary headquarters must be secured immediately to ensure that party operations continue smoothly. He suggested that any PDP-controlled state liaison office could serve this purpose in the meantime.
He said this step would also help block access to the party’s core operations by those he referred to as “agents of destruction.”
According to Ugochinyere, if these steps are not taken quickly, the PDP risks collapse. “Governors and lawmakers are preparing to leave the party. Nigeria cannot take PDP seriously if the party cannot save itself,” he warned.
He reminded party leaders of the sacrifices of past heroes like Alex Ekwueme, Solomon Lar, and Adamu Ciroma, and called for courage and decisive action.
