Pro-Wike PDP Faction Fixes March 28 for National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its national convention in Abuja.

The decision was announced after the faction held its 105th National Executive Committee meeting on Monday in Abuja.

In a communiqué signed by the factional Caretaker Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, the NEC approved a nationwide timetable for party congresses.

According to the schedule, ward and local government congresses will hold in February 2026, while state congresses will take place in March 2026.

The NEC said the national convention will be used to elect a new National Working Committee and other statutory organs of the party.

It also approved the extension of the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee, as well as affected state and zonal caretaker committees, pending the conduct of the congresses.

The NEC directed the Caretaker Committee to immediately activate convention sub-committees and begin full preparations to ensure a transparent and credible convention.

The meeting reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Mohammed-led Caretaker Committee, with Anyanwu as secretary, describing it as the only lawful national leadership of the PDP for now.

Members of the party were urged to remain disciplined, loyal, and committed to unity as efforts continue to rebuild the PDP into a strong and competitive party.

The decision follows a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan, which nullified the PDP national convention held in November 2025 that produced Taminu Turaki as national chairman.

The court ruled that the Mohammed and Anyanwu-led Caretaker Committee remains the only recognised national leadership until a valid convention is held.

Justice Uche Agomoh also barred Turaki and other officials elected at the Ibadan convention from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

Speaking at a Board of Trustees meeting, factional BoT Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa described the PDP as being at a critical stage and urged leaders to put the party above personal interests.

He said delays in holding congresses were intentional, to allow ongoing court cases to be resolved.

Mohammed thanked the Board of Trustees and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for their support, saying it helped stabilise the party.

He assured members that the party would soon release a full timetable to conclude outstanding congresses and move smoothly toward the national convention.

The statements from the NEC and BoT show the Wike-backed faction’s determination to respect court rulings and push ahead with a legally recognised PDP convention.
