A group known as the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has publicly thrown its weight behind the planned impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as a strictly constitutional process.
The group made its position known in a joint press statement issued within the last 24 hours, a development that has further heightened tensions in the ongoing political crisis rocking Rivers State.
According to the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress, the impeachment process has nothing to do with ethnicity, sentiment, or external influence, but is instead rooted in alleged breaches of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“The prevailing political situation in Rivers State is strictly a constitutional matter arising from alleged infractions of the constitution and remains an issue exclusively between the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Governor,” the group stated.
The group urged other socio-cultural and ethnic organisations to refrain from what it described as interference, insisting that constitutional issues should be resolved through legal and judicial channels rather than public rhetoric or emotional appeals.
It also dismissed claims that former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is involved in the impeachment process, arguing that he holds no legislative authority within the state.
“Chief Nyesom Wike is not part of this constitutional dispute, as he is not a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the statement added.
However, the position of the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has drawn sharp reactions from other Ijaw leaders and groups, who say the group does not speak for the entire Ijaw nation.
Speaking on Channels Television, Professor Benjamin Okaba, National President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), rejected the claim that the impeachment process is free of political influence.

Professor Okaba insisted that no single group has the mandate to speak on behalf of the Ijaw people, stressing that the impeachment move is politically motivated and harmful to democratic stability in Rivers State.
“The only body authorised to make broad declarations on behalf of the Ijaw people is the Ijaw National Congress,” he said.
