Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Dan Ulasi, has said the Southeast region does not need to produce Nigeria’s president in order to achieve meaningful development. According to him, a united and sincere leadership effort from the five state governors in the zone is enough to transform the region into a globally competitive industrial hub.
Ulasi, who spoke in an exclusive interview with Symfoni TV, explained that although the Southeast has been politically sidelined since the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, the region remains rich in human capacity, entrepreneurship, and developmental experience.
“We don’t need to be president of Nigeria to develop the Southeast. All we need is for our five governors to be committed and have the interest of our people at heart. If they coordinate their efforts, our place will be as good as Taiwan or Japan,” he said.
He stressed that the Igbo have played key roles in developing cities across Nigeria, especially Lagos and parts of the North, and therefore possess the ability to replicate the same level of progress back home.
Ulasi noted that after the civil war, the fear of displacement and insecurity drove a surge in personal building and real estate development across the Southeast. He believes similar collective energy can now power regional industrialization.

Speaking on the 2027 elections, Ulasi maintained that Peter Obi of the Labour Party remains a national candidate, not an ethnic one.
“Peter Obi has gone beyond being an Igbo politician. Nigerians see him as hope — especially those who no longer trust the system. If there is still a Nigeria in 2027, he will contest — and people believe he won’t disappoint them,” he stated.
He, however, warned that Nigeria is currently in a fragile state, with political divisions reminiscent of the tension that preceded the civil war.
“You can be inside a place and it is no longer a country. Once you balkanize a nation, unity collapses. The signs are there again, and it is dangerous,” he cautioned.

On former U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks describing Nigeria as a country of “particular concern” over religious killings, Ulasi said evidence from Plateau and other regions shows the claim is not unfounded.
“The government is not defending the situation properly. They are struggling to explain their way out of it — and doing so poorly,” he added
