Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has paid tribute in a condolence visit to the late Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, describing him as a fearless leader committed to justice, national unity, and the fight against marginalization. Leading a delegation of prominent elders, traditional rulers, and political leaders from Rivers State, Governor Fubara visited the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family residence in Abuja on Tuesday to offer condolences.
Chief Edwin Clark, a revered South-South leader and statesman, passed away on February 17, 2025, at the age of 97. Governor Fubara highlighted his immense contributions to Nigeria, stating that his role in nation-building and advocacy for social justice placed him in a strategic position in the country’s history. He acknowledged Clark’s unwavering stance against leadership recklessness and injustice, praising his integrity, selflessness, and dedication to the greater good.
“Papa lived very long—over 90 years is no joke—with full energy, still contributing positively. While he is no longer with us, we cherish the wonderful work he did,” Governor Fubara said. He also expressed gratitude for Clark’s support during his own challenging times, emphasizing that the late elder statesman never hesitated to speak truth to power.
During the visit, Governor Fubara stressed the need to immortalize Chief Clark, not just as a South-South leader but as a national figure whose contributions went beyond regional interests. “We have to immortalize his name. It is not just about the South-South; it is about his contributions to nation-building,” he stated. He assured the bereaved family of Rivers State’s commitment to supporting a befitting burial, urging them to remain united and uphold the legacy of their father.
Welcoming the delegation, Ebikeme Clark, son of the late statesman, expressed deep appreciation for the visit and the overwhelming support from Nigerians. He acknowledged his father’s far-reaching impact across the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and beyond, extending gratitude to Governor Fubara and his team for standing by the family.
The condolence visit reinforced Chief Edwin Clark’s enduring legacy as a champion of justice and unity, with Governor Fubara’s call for his immortalization underscoring the significance of his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic and social landscape.
