Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives for Ideato and a constitutional democracy advocate, has condemned the recent military coup in Guinea-Bissau while insisting that the ousted President should face treason charges.
In a statement from Abuja, Ugochinyere described the Guinean President as “desperate” for disqualifying major opponents across political parties, a move he said undermined the democratic process. “The military responded by removing him from power, and now he claims democracy is under attack. Is he not a fool?” he said.
Ugochinyere stressed that “any illegal takeover of power—whether by hijacking the democratic process, manipulating the judiciary or parliament, or by military overthrow is illegal.” He urged Guinea-Bissau to begin anew, asserting that neither the deposed President nor the military holds legitimate authority.
Criticizing Africa’s failure to check the abuse of democratic processes, Ugochinyere referenced Tanzania’s precedent, where the disqualification of political opponents has destabilized the nation. “African Union and ECOWAS should not complain when such actions yield consequences,” he said.
He called on ECOWAS to facilitate a fresh transitional process in Guinea-Bissau and emphasized that any leader undermining democracy must face consequences. “The deposed President of Guinea-Bissau must be arrested and charged for treason for undermining the constitution, the electoral process, and the power of the people. This will serve as a warning to those trying to replicate the Tanzania model in Africa,” Ugochinyere concluded.
