Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo has commended President Bola Tinubu, noting that he rescued Nigeria’s economy from a near-collapse, describing the situation the current administration inherited as a “standing dead horse.”
Speaking at The Platform Nigeria, a Democracy Day event hosted by Pastor Poju Oyemade in Lagos, Soludo credited Tinubu’s bold structural reforms for stabilizing Nigeria’s battered finances and returning the country to a path of solvency.
“The economy was at the tipping point. Public finance was about to collapse. It could have led to mass retrenchments or unpaid salaries and pensions,” Soludo said. “But thanks to President Tinubu’s reforms, we are back on the path of financial solvency.”
The former Central Bank Governor didn’t mince words about the harsh realities of the economy prior to Tinubu’s tenure, comparing the inherited state to a horse that looked alive but could not move.

He acknowledged the praise President Tinubu has received from global financial institutions, including the World Bank, IMF, and top international rating agencies like Fitch and Moody’s, and urged Nigerians to take those endorsements seriously.
“These endorsements are well-deserved. And let me say this as someone who made a living criticising these institutions — this time, they are largely right,” Soludo remarked.
But beyond the economy, Soludo warned that Nigeria’s real battle is not just about money or policy, but values and identity. He called for an ethical rebirth across the nation, stressing that no country can thrive without a new generation of patriotic citizens.
“We must deliberately raise a critical mass of Nigerians who are willing to serve and, if need be, die for their country,” he stated. “Our struggle is no longer for independence, but for development—and that struggle requires new nationalists with the right values.”
Soludo lamented the cultural shift towards quick money, shortcuts, and the glorification of fraud, noting that Nigeria’s traditional values of hard work, integrity, and community have been eroded. He further urged political parties to align ideologically and focus on issue-based politics, not tribalism or opportunism. He maintained that rebuilding Nigeria must start with reshaping the moral compass of the people.

The Anambra State Governor concluded by encouraging economic critics to go beyond mere opinions and offer data-backed alternatives.
“The task looks easy when you’re not the one doing it. Let’s go beyond opinions. Let’s be rigorous. Let’s offer real solutions,” he said.
