Hollywood icon Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, authorities confirmed late Wednesday.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office stated that officers responded to the couple’s home on Sunset Trail, where both were discovered deceased. While the cause of death remains under investigation, law enforcement officials do not currently suspect foul play. “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence. This remains an active investigation,” Sheriff Adan Mendoza said in a press briefing.
Gene Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, had a storied career spanning over six decades. He won Best Actor for his iconic role as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992). His acclaimed performances also included Bonnie and Clyde (1967), I Never Sang for My Father (1970), and Mississippi Burning (1988).
Hackman was also beloved for his role as Lex Luthor in the Superman franchise and starred in films such as The Royal Tenenbaums, The Conversation, and Runaway Jury. His final film appearance was in Welcome to Mooseport (2004), after which he retired from acting.
Born in California in 1930, Hackman served in the U.S. Marines before pursuing acting. He trained at the Pasadena Playhouse, where he formed a lifelong friendship with Dustin Hoffman.

Authorities have not disclosed the cause or estimated time of death. Sheriff Mendoza mentioned that a search warrant is pending to aid the investigation.
