The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is training 1,000 civil servants on IT Project Clearance processes to enhance digital transformation in Nigeria’s public sector. Learn how this initiative is shaping the future of e-governance.

Abuja, Nigeria – The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has launched a large-scale digital transformation training for 1,000 civil servants across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in Nigeria. This initiative aims to enhance IT Project Clearance processes, improve governance, and build a digitally competent workforce to support the federal government’s e-governance strategy.

The training, which is being conducted in batches at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN) in Abuja, focuses on equipping ICT, Budget, Finance, and Planning officers with essential skills in digital project planning, budgeting, deployment, and sustainability.

NITDA’s Commitment to Digital Transformation

Speaking at the event themed “Empowering Public Sector ICT Excellence Through Strategic Planning and Effective Funding,” NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, highlighted the agency’s commitment to digital transformation through its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0. Represented by the Director of IT Infrastructure Solutions, Mr. Oladejo Olawunmi, Inuwa explained that the SRAP 2.0 aligns with Nigeria’s national priorities by focusing on talent development, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, innovation, and policy implementation.

Despite progress, NITDA identified key challenges hindering digital transformation in Nigeria’s public sector, including: Limited collaboration among government agencies, Short-term project planning leading to inefficiencies, Poor maintenance of ICT infrastructure, Software licensing issues and Lack of capacity-building programs.

These barriers have contributed to suboptimal results in government-led digital initiatives. To address these challenges, NITDA has strengthened the IT Project Clearance process to ensure digital projects are well-conceptualized and aligned with national development goals.

Inuwa also revealed that only 12% of Federal Public Institutions (FPIs) currently comply with IT Project Clearance requirements. He stressed the need for a whole-of-government approach to align digital transformation efforts across all MDAs. “We must ensure that public funds are utilized effectively, with digital projects that provide real value to citizens,” he stated.

The NITDA digital transformation training includes expert-led sessions, case studies, and interactive discussions to help participants gain practical knowledge on optimizing budgeting, financial oversight, and strategic planning for IT projects. Inuwa emphasized the critical role of ICT, finance, and planning officers in ensuring Nigeria’s e-governance success. “Each of you plays a vital role in managing resources, planning programs, and delivering essential services. Together, we can drive a transparent, efficient, and digital-first government,” he concluded.

Through this initiative, NITDA aims to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation, ensuring that civil servants have the necessary skills to implement e-governance policies, improve service delivery, and support the country’s digital economy growth. This training marks a significant step toward a fully digital public sector, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Nigeria’s governance.
