The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT Ltd), describing it as a key driver in the nation’s journey towards space technology and digital advancement.
During a recent visit to NIGCOMSAT’s Ground Control Station in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Mr. Rafiu Olarinre Adeladan, praised the agency for helping to connect Nigerians, close digital gaps, and strengthen Nigeria’s role in the global tech economy.
“NIGCOMSAT is more than just an implementing agency,” he said. “It is a strategic partner in achieving Nigeria’s goals in space technology, broadband access, and digital sovereignty.”
Adeladan noted some of the challenges facing the agency, including a long-standing recruitment freeze, shortage of technical experts, and the need for better staff pay. He also pointed out the importance of fast-tracking Project 774 — a key initiative aimed at expanding digital connectivity across all local government areas in Nigeria.

He assured NIGCOMSAT of the Ministry’s support, promising to find real solutions to the problems — even if it requires new policies and coordination with other government bodies.

In her response, NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director and CEO, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, expressed her gratitude for the visit. She restated the agency’s commitment to leading Nigeria’s push into space and called on the Ministry to give more attention to NIGCOMSAT’s needs.
“If other nations can reach space, there is no reason Nigeria cannot,” she said. “NIGCOMSAT is ready to lead that journey.”
