The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
The decision, announced on Thursday by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, followed a meeting between the police chief and a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to Hundeyin, the meeting focused on the ongoing enforcement of the tinted glass law and the need for greater collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the NBA in promoting the rule of law and public confidence.

Police Suspend Enforcement Pending Court Ruling
While clarifying that there is no clear court order stopping enforcement of the 1991 Act, Hundeyin said the police chose to suspend it “out of consideration for the interest of Nigerians and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association,” pending the hearing of a motion on notice slated for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court, Warri, Delta State.
He added that the suspension would remain in effect until the court determines the substantive case filed in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025 — John Aikpokpo-Martins v. Inspector-General of Police & Nigeria Police Force , in which the court had earlier directed the police to maintain the status quo.

To strengthen institutional cooperation, the Inspector-General also inaugurated a joint Police–NBA committee to enhance collaboration between both bodies in matters of law enforcement and justice administration.
Hundeyin advised motorists to use the suspension window to regularise their vehicle documentation and ensure full compliance with laws regulating the use of shaded or tinted glasses.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Egbetokun, reiterates the resolve of the Force to enforce all extant laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for the rights of all citizens while maintaining effective collaboration with critical stakeholders in the administration of justice,” he stated.
The temporary suspension comes amid ongoing debate over the enforcement of tinted glass regulations and concerns about motorists’ rights under Nigerian law.
