To build a more inclusive digital future, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is putting Nigerian women at the heart of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital economy plans.
Speaking at the Innovate Her 25 conference in Abuja this week, NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa (represented by Dr. Aristotle Onumo), set the tone for NITDA’s renewed focus on women’s empowerment, stating that “Innovation doesn’t grow in isolation — it thrives on partnerships.”
The event, themed Women in AI: Unlocking Resilience, Fostering Innovation and Leadership, brought together female tech leaders from across Nigeria. NITDA used the platform to share its strategy to close the gender gap in digital skills and opportunities.
“We’ve designed our national AI roadmap to ensure that at least 40% of all our programmes directly benefit women and underserved groups,” Inuwa stated. Adding that a full Gender Inclusion Strategy is already guiding new efforts in training, infrastructure, and access to opportunities.
Looking ahead, Inuwa announced that NITDA will host a Leadership Summit on AI in September 2025, inviting African nations to join hands in creating a shared AI future. “We’re leading from the front, and women will not be left behind,” he added.
From training in cloud computing and cybersecurity to partnerships with groups like the Renew Hope Initiative, NITDA says it has trained thousands of women across all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. More tailored programs are on the way.
“We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all,” Inuwa said. “We want specific programmes that solve real community problems — and we’re open to working with organisations like Nigerian Women in Information Technology (NIWIT) to make that happen.”
He also highlighted NITDA’s “Digital Literacy for All” initiative, which aims to train over 30 million Nigerians in basic digital skills by 2027 — with a strong focus on underserved areas, schools, and public service.

On the ethical side of AI, Inuwa stressed the importance of building indigenous datasets that protect Nigerian culture and values. “We must develop technology that reflects our reality,” he said.
To ensure long-term impact, NITDA is also pushing mentorship through its Women Innovate initiative. The agency is calling on groups like NIWIT to come forward with ideas — and is ready to sign formal partnerships to bring them to life.
