The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of bias and called for the immediate removal of its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday following INEC’s announcement of the removal of National Chairman, David Mark and the Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, ADC leaders alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was determined to remain in power “by hook or crook.”
The party claimed that recent actions by INEC were part of a broader effort to destabilize the ADC ahead of future elections.
According to the party, a faction allegedly led by Nafi’u Bala Gombe had become “a tool in the hands” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to weaken the opposition party from within.
ADC further accused INEC of deliberately creating confusion regarding the party’s internal leadership issues.
“INEC is only pretending to be confused. This INEC can no longer be trusted,” the party said, adding that the commission had become “undoubtedly biased.”
The party warned that the issue was not only about ADC but about the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
“ADC is not under attack; the entire Nigeria is under attack,” the party stated.
The opposition party also questioned President Tinubu directly, asking: “Tinubu, what are you afraid of?”
ADC concluded the briefing by demanding the immediate resignation or removal of the INEC chairman and insisted that “Amupitan must go,” describing the situation as unacceptable for a democratic system.
