Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad has resigned.
His resignation came amidst allegations of incapacity to lead the judicial arm of government levelled against him by 14 other justices of the Supreme Court.
Though Justice Muhammad put his decision on the doorstep of ill-health, Symfoninews gathered that he was rattled by the petition of the justices after it leaked to the public.
The petition accused Tanko of stifling the smooth running of the Supreme Court among other unwholesome practices.
Sources at the apex Nigerian Court say the process of appointing a successor has been initiated.
Tradition demands that the next most senior justice of the court assumes leadership immediately.
In this case, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola will have to step in as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria barring any political disposition by the executive as was seen in the process that made Tank the CJN against Justice Walter Onnoghen.
