The House of Representatives has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, following the political turmoil in the region. In a voice vote on Thursday, the lawmakers overwhelmingly supported Tinubu’s move, endorsing the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.
The decision came after the House received a formal letter from the President outlining the rationale behind the emergency declaration. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, presided over the session in Abuja, with 240 lawmakers reportedly in attendance.
The endorsement by the House has further deepened the divide among Nigerians, with some viewing it as a necessary step to restore stability, while others argue it sets a dangerous precedent for democratic governance.
