Koshoedo Assumes Office as PDP Interim National Sec., Urges Party Unity Ahead of 2027

Architect Setonji Koshoedo has officially taken over as the Acting National Secretary of the party. His assumption of office, confirmed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, follows the resolution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), signaling a fresh phase in PDP’s internal restructuring and long-term political planning.

Koshoedo, who until now was serving as the Deputy National Secretary, held his first meeting with top management staff at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja shortly after assuming office.

In his address, Koshoedo tackled not only the internal matters of the party but also national political developments, noting that this is a time for healing, unity, and strategic preparation for the 2027 general elections.

“We are not a conquered people,” he declared. “We are Nigerians—tax-paying, law-abiding citizens with rights. And when the time comes, Nigerians will speak through the ballot.”

His remarks, though impassioned, were calculated to strike a chord with both PDP members and the wider Nigerian public. He criticized recent political events in Delta State, where key figures defected from the PDP, noting that the party had taken immediate corrective action by dissolving all its structures in the state and setting up a zonal caretaker committee to oversee party affairs.

Koshoedo emphasized that these defections do not signal weakness, but rather test the party’s ability to adapt and rebuild. “Yes, some members have chosen to leave, but their departure does not diminish the strength of the PDP. If anything, it challenges us to reorganize and push harder,” he said.

According to him, the PDP has a long-standing history of overcoming internal crises and emerging stronger. He pointed out that the current leadership, including the NWC, remains united and crisis-free, contrary to narratives suggesting internal discord.

“If anyone is looking for an excuse to justify betrayal or defection, they may try to point to a crisis that does not exist. But let me be clear: this NWC is intact and fully committed to the unity and progress of our great party,” he said.

Koshoedo also spoke on broader national issues, accusing the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government of failing the Nigerian people. He cited widespread hardship, insecurity, and a lack of economic direction as reasons why the PDP must remain a viable alternative for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

“This government has been insensitive to the yearnings and sufferings of the people. There is hardship everywhere, and no visible plan to ease it. Nigerians are tired. And when the time comes, they will make their voices heard,” he noted.

He made it clear that the party is preparing thoroughly for the next electoral cycle, beginning with internal reforms. According to him, the PDP has approved zonal congresses for the South West, North East, and South East, and has also set up a caretaker committee for the North Central zone pending fresh elections.

Speaking on the party’s planned national convention, Koshoedo explained that while the NWC has proposed dates — tentatively August 28–30 — the final decision rests with the National Executive Committee (NEC), which is expected to meet soon to deliberate on the proposals.

“We’ve adopted the recommendations from our meeting in Ibadan and will forward them to NEC. Only NEC can take the final decision, but the groundwork is already being laid,” he explained.

Koshoedo rounded off his remarks with a passionate appeal to PDP supporters nationwide to stay focused and committed to the party’s values.

“Let no one be discouraged. This party has always bounced back, and this time will not be different. 2027 will be about the people, not intimidation, not propaganda. We must all rise to the occasion.”
