The Lagos State Police Command has stopped an unapproved Egungun festival allegedly planned by a group identifying itself as the “Oje Parapo of Oregun,” after posters and handbills surfaced warning residents to remain indoors during the scheduled cultural rites.
The publications, which directed all residents to stay indoors between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. on November 27 and 28, 2025, and ordered all lights to be switched off, were described by the Command as a violation of citizens’ constitutional rights to movement, expression, and dignity. According to the statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, twelve suspects connected to the circulation of the posters have already been arrested.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the suspension of the proposed festival, warning that the event poses a potential threat to public peace and safety. He noted that the fear and tension generated among residents by the restrictive notice made it impossible for the Command to guarantee security for the festival. He stressed that no group has the authority to impose curfew-like restrictions or disrupt the rights of other Nigerians under any circumstances.

The Command also disclosed that a similar incident occurred in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where another group attempted to enforce unauthorized restrictions. Police operatives from Makinde Division promptly intervened on November 23, 2025, arresting twelve suspects who are currently under investigation and will be prosecuted.
The Lagos Police assured residents that security has been strengthened across the State and urged the public to go about their lawful activities without fear. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or attempts to enforce illegal restrictions through the police emergency lines provided.
The statement reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public order, and ensuring that cultural activities do not infringe on the rights and freedoms of Lagosians.
